I have many years broad working experience with consultants, contractors and instrumentation specialists. I have worked on projects in the fields of tunnelling, roads, railways, buildings, water treatment, earth, concrete and tailings dams in both UK and overseas.I joined Knight Piesold as a Geotechnical Engineer in September 1988 and was promoted to a senior position in July 1996 when the firm was incorporated. I have been carrying out design and analysis of geotechnical engineering and instrumentation monitoring results for dams in U.K. as well as in Kenya, Botswana, Malaysia, Canada and France. In the last two years, I have been a member of the design team for the underground development project of the European Organization for Nuclear research (CERN) in Switzerland. For this project I carried out numerical modelling using FLAC, FLAC 3D, EXAMINE 3D, and UDEC to simulate stage construction of the project adjacent to operational existing structures. The development includes a 35m span concrete lined cavern in soft rock, a 25m secondary cavern, three vertical shafts up to 20m in diameter together with many interconnecting tunnels. Sequential excavation and construction, together with rock degradation and swelling have all been modelled in order to investigate their influence on the supporting structures.
Site investigation and foundation engineering, Dams and embankments, Rock and soft ground tunnelling, Ground treatment and stabilisation, Groundwater control, Instrumentation, Numerical modelling (2D and 3D).
Mt Polley, Canada. Responsible for numerical modelling, using finite difference and finite element methods, to evaluate construction pore water pressure and slope stability of the tailings dam, together with groundwater contamination from the tailings depository.

Milcell Quarry, UK. Responsible for numerical modelling to investigate the primary and secondary settlements of house foundations on quarry waste-filled site.
Pergau Hydroelectric Project, Malaysia. Involved in the design and analysis of the 75 m high earth-filled embankment dam and its monitoring instrumentation. The dam used, in total, approximately 2.2 million cubic metres of earthfill. The scheme is able to generate 600 MW of hydro-electricity.
Salsigne Gold Project, France. Involved in the design and stability analysis of the tailings dam and the design of the instrumentation scheme.
Olkaria Geothermal Power Station, Kenya. Engaged on the seismic risk analysis using in-house computer package.
Kiambere Hydro-Electric Project, Kenya. Engaged on the analysis of instrumentation readings. The project involves a 140 MW hydro-power scheme including a 112 m high dam.
Selebi Phikwe Tailings Dam, Botswana. Involved in the analysis of seepage conditions of the dam with large and small tailings ponds, also the preparation of a report on the results.
Mahalapye Dam, Botswana. Engaged on the design and analysis of the dam, and the appraisal of earthworks during feasibility study stage.
Canterbury Crown and Courts Building. Involved in the analysis of site investigation results, design for the piled basement foundation and the design and analysis of retaining walls.
Milton Keynes Crown Building. Engaged on the design of the piled foundation.
Responsible for the provision of technical advice, design of instrumentation schemes, and the preparation of tenders. The following are some examples of projects involved:-
Kiambere Dam, Kenya. Preparation of the instrumentation proposal for the powerhouse tunnel. The project involved manual and remote readout equipment to monitor the movement of tunnel surfaces.
Boukourdane Dam, Algeria. Responsible for the preparation of the technical proposal and tender for the instrumentation scheme. The project involved inclinometers, settlement gauges, pressure cells, piezometers, accelerographs and data logging equipment.
Sei Ladi Dam, Batam Island, Indonesia. Responsible for the design and preparation of tender for the instrumentation scheme. The dam is an earthfilled dam of 25 m height. The scheme included settlement gauges, piezometers and pressure cells.
Sungai Ahning Dam, Malaysia. Responsible for the preparation of the tender and technical proposal. The project involved a 120 m high earth dam with a concrete lining. Instruments included were electric joint meters, strain meters and inclined inclinometers. The scheme was designed to monitor the movement and deformation of the impervious concrete lining.
Hedon Bypass, Humberside, UK. Responsible for the preparation of technical proposal for the instrumentation scheme for a road embankment constructed on soft ground foundation. The scheme involved inclinometers, settlement gauges, piezometers, hydrostatic profile gauges and associated data processing facilities.
Channel Tunnel, UK and France. Responsible for the preparation of the instrumentation tender for the supply of monitoring instruments.
M25, Bell Lane Pit, UK. Responsible for the preparation of tender for an instrumentation contract in association with a road embankment constructed on a refuse pit where dynamic consolidation was to be carried out on the foundation.
Greenhead Bypass, Northumberland, UK. Involved in the installation and commissioning of instruments. Pneumatic piezometers, slip indicators, inclinometers, and settlement gauges were used in the project.
Great Yarmouth Bypass, Norfolk, UK. Engaged on the installation and commissioning of hydrostatic profile gauges and hydraulic piezometers.
Glasgow Underground, UK. Responsible for the preparation of the technical proposal and the design of the automatic crack monitoring and groundwater level monitoring instrumentation schemes.
Responsible for the preparation of tenders and technical proposals for the instrumentation works associated with the construction of deep basements.
Carried out research projects on geotextiles in civil engineering, and sewage survey techniques and remedial measures. Laboratory testing, literature survey and site visits were carried out during the course of the projects.
Peel Common, Hampshire, UK. Involved in the slope stability analysis preparation of dewatering scheme and design of earth-retaining structures in association with an 11 m deep excavation.
Brown Down Outfall, Gosport, Hampshire, UK. Engaged on the supervision of offshore site investigation and the installation and commissioning of pneumatic piezometers in the seabed.
